Welcome to Hillside Market Garden

Hillside Market Garden is rooted in rural Central Bedfordshire and is a one acre market garden with a focus and passion for growing delicious and nutritious seasonal vegetables and fresh cut flowers. At our core we are all about local food for local people and the positive benefits buying local food can bring. We believe that food grown locally introduces communities to seasonality and encourages variety in diets. It also means the food requires less transportation, so it is not only fresher but has a smaller environmental footprint.

Veg Boxes

The Hillside Market Garden veg box scheme provides local people with a range of fresh seasonal produce from around May through to November. Everything that goes into making up the veg boxes has been grown on our site in Gravenhurst. Our veg boxes reflect what is in season throughout the year meaning we only harvest the freshest crops available, for example from cabbage, beetroot and spring onions in the spring; to tomatoes, salad and beans in the summer; going into calabrese, squash and carrots in the autumn.

If you have any questions or require further information about the veg boxes then please send us a message via the contact us page.  Or to find out what we are up to then follow us on Instagram @hillsidemarketgarden.

About Us

Hillside Market Garden is a new business venture by growers Simon and Jenny. It is located on an acre of rented land in Gravenhurst, Bedfordshire and is part of Wassledine estate whose ethos is to leave the farm in a better condition in terms of productivity, beauty and biodiversity than when they started.

Hillside Market Garden’s philosophy is based around organic principles and has adopted a no-dig approach to help build soil health and biodiversity to grow great crops without the need for chemicals and fertilizers. We have developed 150 permanent no dig beds that will be used to facilitate the growing of year-round fruit, vegetables and herbs as well as fresh cut flowers throughout the seasons. Polytunnels will be used to enable tender crops, like tomatoes and cucumbers to be grown and for growing crops throughout the winter.

Central Bedfordshire has a rich history of market gardening. However, over the past 100 years the small-scale market gardens once a common feature of many towns and villages have steadily been replaced by large scale mechanical farms producing just one or two crops, primarily arable. Today, access to truly locally grown and seasonal vegetables and fruit is very limited.

Flowers

As part of our one-acre site a section is dedicated to growing a range of edible and cut flowers. Great thought has been given to growing varieties that have incredible scent, such as
sweet peas and phlox, or have intriguing structure and shapes, especially in a dried form.

The flowers being grown vary from bulbs, annuals and perennials meaning cut flowers can be produced for many months of the year. In keeping with our edible produce everything will be grown using the same methods and philosophy as our vegetable production. We also see growing flowers as adding a level of diversity that will attract pollinators and other beneficial insects that will add to the biodiversity of the site as a whole.

Events

Hillside Market Garden are able to run a range of events including floral workshops, demonstrations and site tours.

We are able to run various seasonal workshops for independent groups including wreaths and floral arrangements for Easter, Mother’s Day, Autumn and Christmas. Workshops and demonstrations could be held in village halls, schools or business premises and tailored to suit the needs of the group, for example, team building days.

If you would like to learn more about what we do and the methods we use then we are happy to accommodate site tours for small groups by appointment only.

If you are interested in any of the events we offer, then we would love to hear from you.
